READER PHOTO: Impromptu 9-11 Observance - At the Local Diamond

Solemn day in a lot of ways Sunday as the nation and Lamorinda marked the events of 9-11. Miramonte student Emma Barr took this picture of an impromptu ceremony during the opening day of the Orinda Baseball Association's Pony Fall Ball season.

Playing ball on such a momentous day in history deserved recognition, one fan wrote, so some creative player placement was conducted, retired Marine (do you ever really retire from the Marine Corps?) Fred Matteson talked a little about 9-11 and then launched into an a capella version of the National Anthem.

 Then it was "Play ball!"
