As we celebrate, decorate, give gifts and travel this holiday season, we tend to generate a lot of waste. According to the EPA, the volume of household waste in the United States generally increases by nearly 25 percent between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.
We’ve pulled together a few ideas on how to reduce your use this holiday season.
- Know how much to serve. Having an appetizer party? The rule of thumb is 12 pieces to each guest. Serving a main course? Reduce the amount of appetizers to six pieces to each guest. By following serving guidelines, you’ll help reduce your leftovers and eliminate the potential for wasted food.
- Shop locally. Buy seasonal fruits and vegetables from Farmers’ Markets and help support your economy by visiting local stores rather than chains whenever possible.
- Are you traveling this season? Before your trip, make sure your tires are properly inflated. Properly inflated tires will increase your fuel economy while reducing greenhouse emissions.
- Think outside the dish. Bell peppers make great containers for dips.
- Choose gift wrap and cards made from recycled materials, or send e-cards instead.
- If you need to use disposable plates and silverware, look for ones made from recycled or compostable materials like corn and bamboo.
