The Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery presents Side x Side, an exhibit that features the paintings of James Koskinas and Julie Schumer. Koskinas and Schumer are married and share a studio in Santa Fe, NM. They both work in acrylic and tend towards a painting style of large scale abstract expressionism and figurative work. Schumer’s paintings are abstract works, with bold brushwork and color. The figure is Koskina’s primary theme, part of his quest to know the human condition. They paint companionably in their Santa Fe studio, a modern day Jackson Pollack and Lee Krasner. The exhibit runs March 9 through April 15th with an Artist’s Reception Thursday March 9th at 6PM, which includes a presentation by the artists and a film preview of The Twilight Angel.

James Koskinas is a painter, writer, actor and co-creator of the film, “The Twilight Angel,” as well as a play, “Even if The Mountains Burn.” He attended California College of the Arts, in Oakland, California and has more recently studied with artists Bob Winston, Robert Burridge, and Dean Howell. The film “The Twilight Angel” celebrates how we all have a story to tell, and the potential for triumph, transcendence and redemption– turning one's own life journey into art.

Julie Schumer began painting at age 5 and continued through high school. She was an abstract expressionist early on, being chastised by her elementary school teachers for her drippy non-realist work. In college her practical nature asserted itself and she became a lawyer instead of an artist. In the following years she collected art, wishing all the while she had painted what she collected. In 2000, she reconnected with an old friend, artist James Koskinas. He sensed her long suppressed desire to create art and asked her why she wasn’t painting. Schumer answered she didn’t know. Koskinas brought her several pieces of wood, acrylic paint and a few brushes and said, “Paint.” Schumer hasn’t stopped painting since. Since reengaging with her art, Schumer has studied at California College of the Arts in Oakland, California and with artists Robert Burridge, Mira White and Edward Gilliam.
