Teens Suspected In Kidnapping, Carjacking And Shooting Of Boy In County-Wide Spree: Police

Teens face serious charges, including suspected attempted homicide, kidnapping, and carjacking, after a spree ending in Orinda.

LAMORINDA, CA — Two teens face charges including attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping and carjacking after an early-morning spree that began with a shooting in Oakley and ended with a police pursuit and arrest in Orinda.

Investigators said the incident started with a dispute among a group of Oakley teens in a vehicle near Cypress Grove Park. Two of them became angry when others refused to drive them to buy marijuana, prompting a confrontation that escalated into an armed carjacking, shooting and multi-agency chase across Contra Costa County.

Oakley police were called shortly after 1 a.m. Monday to the area of Cypress Road and Frank Hengel Way in response to reports of a possible kidnapping and shooting. Officers found several teens at the corner of Rubens Way and East Cypress Road, including a young man who had been grazed in the head by a bullet.

According to police, a group of three Oakley residents — a man, woman, and a girl in her teens — picked up two teens earlier in the night.

While the group was in the vehicle at the park, tensions rose, and one of the teens got out.

Police said they suspect that the two teens then forced the females, at gunpoint, to drive away. When the driver refused to continue, they forced her and the other female out of the car and drove away.

As they drove away, the teen who had originally gotten out of the vehicle followed them to the intersection of Cypress Road and Frank Hengel Way. Police suspect that one of the suspects fired multiple shots through the windshield, grazing his head.

A Contra Costa County Sheriff’s deputy spotted the vehicle driving westbound on Highway 4. The deputy's attempt to stop the vehicle led instead to a pursuit that finally ended when their vehicle stalled out on westbound Highway 24 in Orinda, police said.

The suspects were arrested and booked into juvenile hall on outstanding warrants and the new charges. The injured male was taken to a local hospital and treated. Oakley police asked anyone with information to contact the department.
