Helix Board Elects Officers For 2021

At a December 9, 2020 meeting, the Helix Water District Board of Directors elected Director Joel Scalzitti to serve as board president in 2021 and Director Kathleen Coates Hedberg to serve as the board’s vice president.

Scalzitti was elected to the board in 2012 and represents Helix’s division 5, which extends from El Cajon to Lake Jennings.

Hedberg has served on Helix’s board since 2006 and represents the district’s division 4 customers in La Mesa, Casa de Oro and El Cajon.

Helix General Manager Carlos Lugo thanked outgoing president Mark Gracyk for his leadership through “a very challenging 2020”, a year defined by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Scalzitti also recognized Gracyk, “For not missing a beat during his presidency. It did not go unnoticed.”

Recognizing the economic impacts of the pandemic, the district quickly adopted staffing plans and safety protocols in March and the board voted first to suspend late fees and shutoffs, and then to freeze water rates. One of Scalzitti’s first tasks is determining committee assignments for the year ahead. Helix board members represent the district and its customers on the San Diego County Water Authority board and participate in water resources planning, policy-making and funding decisions on regional and statewide committees. Scalzitti will announce assignments in January.
