Tomorrow, November 11 is Veterans Day, a time to remember and appreciate the many generations of U.S. military veterans whose service, courage and sacrifice shaped our nation. Here in San Diego, itβs likely that you know a veteran β a family member, friend, neighbor or coworker β who would appreciate a βThank youβ and being asked about their service.

They might also like to go fishing β Lake Jennings will be open for Veterans Day and we have free fishing or day use permits for veterans, active duty and reservists.
Each year in San Diego, more than 15,000 military personnel transition out of active duty and into the civilian workforce. At Helix, we have 12 veterans on staff and two on our Board of Directors. We hire veterans because the military teaches strong teamwork, problem-solving and adaptability skills, and these are critical skills when you are operating a water treatment plant, repairing a broken water main or troubleshooting an IT issue.

Veteran and Helix Engineering Technician Josh Morrell says his military experience serves him well. βIn the military, there is a lot of teamwork and planning that goes in to every job. When a challenge presented itself, we had to figure out a solution in the field to get the job done. Here at Helix, there are many departments that work together to achieve the same goal. Because most of our infrastructure is underground, we run into challenges daily and have to use critical thinking to complete the task.β
