Lone Star College Montgomery to Host Hunger Banquet

The event on Wednesday, November 16 will help raise awareness of global hunger and poverty and help the LSC-Montgomery Food Pantry.

CONROE – Take a seat at Lone Star College-Montgomery’s Hunger Banquet where the meal you eat is determined by the luck of the draw, just like real life where some are born into prosperity and others into poverty. The event on Wednesday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Commons Building (building A) will help raise awareness of global hunger and poverty issues. Attendees are asked to donate $5 or three canned goods to the LSC-Montgomery Food Pantry.

“We’re excited to host this event at LSC-Montgomery,” said Michele Richey, civic engagement coordinator and associate professor of sociology at LSC-Montgomery. “Educating people and raising awareness about inequality is the first step to helping people understand how hunger and poverty are connected.”

The event is an interactive experience that helps guests understand the reality of hunger. Participants will draw tickets at random that assign them to a high-, middle-, or low-income tier. Each income level receives a corresponding meal. The high-income guests are served a sumptuous meal; the middle-income guests eat a simple meal of rice and beans; and the low-income guests help themselves to small portions of rice and water.

“Not all of us are born with the same opportunities, through this event we hope to educate students, staff and the community by persuading our audience to help those in need,” said Richey. “Hunger affects not only those who are hungry, but all of us as well.”
