Matadors Complete Perfect September with 56-20 Rout of Sweetwater

Fifth-ranked Mount Miguel now 4-0 as it preps for a battle with Helix.

Back in 1929, Coronado High's Frank Greene established a state record which still stands when he scored 11 touchdowns in a 108-0 pasting of Sweetwater.

On Friday, fifth-rated Mount Miguel was temporarily on pace to match that storied scoring pace, going on to shellac the very same Red Devils 56-20 in non-league action at Matadors Stadium.

The victory gives the Matadors (4-0) their second consecutive perfect record in September, starting on the very first touch of the football.

Derrick Dunn took the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown, going on to register 212 yards in total offense (312 all-purpose yards), while quarterback Ernest Williams accounted for five scores, passing for three TDs and running for two others.

"Our defense had my back after I threw two interceptions in the first half," said Williams. "Then the offense turned it on in the second half. I owed it to them."

Williams completed 15-of-22 passes for 197 yards, capped by a 26-yard TD strike to Shannon Nickson on his only attempt of the second half before the Matadors cleared the bench.

"We have a lot of weapons and a great offensive line," Williams added. "Coach told us to leave our emotions in the locker room and concentrate on what we're supposed to do."

Mount Miguel needed just five plays from scrimmage to score three times in the third quarter. Then on the fourth drive,  junior Tony "Bulldozer" Dozier scored on a 64-yard explosion, allowing the Matadors to double their score in the third from a 28-14 lead to 56-20.

For the contest, Mount Miguel collected 504 yards in total offense (293 at the half).

The Sweetwater passing combination of quarterback Sal Nasser (16-33, 160 yards) to receiver Daniel Castro (9-108) connected for scores of 3 and 16 yards.

Nasser also tossed a 4-yard TD pass to Luis Venegas, which was set-up on an 81-yard interception runback by Castro in the second quarter.

Dunn finished with 138 rushing yards, plus four receptions for 74 yards.

On defense for Mount Miguel, senior defensive back Henry Ingram registered an interception, junior linebacker Jalen Walker collected the lone Matadors sack of Nasser for a 16-yard loss, while Anthony Ortega blocked a Sweetwater PAT kick in the first quarter.

Next week, Mount Miguel will face long-time rival Helix, a team expected to move up to the top of the county rankings after the Highlanders defeated Venice 42-20, while top-rated Eastlake lost at home to No. 4 Cathedral Catholic, 26-7.
