Montessori Preschool Fun! Happy Halloween!

Thursday we carved our pumpkin to make our class jack-o-lantern. The children had fun scoping out the insides of the pumpkin. Those who weren't quite ready to embrace all that slimy goodness showed their bravery by touching it with one little finger! We saved our seeds to roast and will use them next month for Thanksgiving Bingo.

We continued to label Mr. Bones. With the help of heavy-duty Velcro, the children can come up and stick the name of the bone on the correct bone. Although we go over 20 bones, the ones they remember the best are phalanges, patella, cranium, mandible and spine. The other bones are: clavicle, ribs, sternum, xiphoid process, humerus, ulna, radius, femur, tibia, fibula, lower phalanges, ilium, ischium, vertabra, and scapula.

One of the reasons I use October to incorporate Mr. Bones and learning about the skeleton in each of us is to take some of the fear out of Halloween. The skeleton sitting on your neighbor’s porch or walking down the street can’t  possibly be real…it is just Halloween fun.

Halloween Bingo serves the same purpose. It is fun to play but it also helps them with the things they may see on Halloween night.  When we first start playing it at the beginning of October, we discuss the pictures on the board. We play is it “real or made-up”? Or some of both? Yes a mummy is real and you can go to a museum and see one. But a mummy walking around is a costume and part of Halloween fun.
