Suspect Accused of Setting Fire to Man in Oak Park Arrested [UPDATED]

The victim suffered what are expected to be fatal burn injuries in the alleged arson attack Sunday, San Diego police said.

SAN DIEGO, CA: A man suspected of setting another man on fire in an Oak Park-area parking lot, leaving the victim with critical burns, was arrested Monday.

A San Diego Police Department sergeant spotted Jose Ricardo Garibay, 26, in a Toyota pickup near 6200 Estrella Avenue around 10:15 a.m., police said. Officers stopped the vehicle and made the arrest.

Garibay was booked into San Diego County Jail Monday night for attempted murder and outstanding misdemeanor warrants, police said.

Authorities received a report about 11:45 a.m. Sunday of a man on fire in the parking lot of the Rite Aid on Euclid Avenue near 54th Street, police said.

The suspect used gasoline or another type of flammable liquid to set fire to the 40-year-old victim, Julio Edeza, police said.

Edeza was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition, police said.

Witnesses helped an artist compose a sketch of the suspect, who was driving a Toyota pickup with a black camper shell, and police said those descriptions helped them find a match.
