SR-84 Death Happened After Speeding Contest, Suspect At-Large: CHP

Police say the Lexus that hit another car in the opposite lane and killed the driver was engaged in a speeding contest.

LIVERMORE, CA — One person was killed and another sustained critical injuries in a head-on crash on Highway 84 near Ruby Hill Drive in Livermore Tuesday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers arrived to SR-84 westbound at Pigeon Pass, and determined that a man was driving a Lexus IS 250 westbound in a speeding contest with a GMC pick-up truck. For reasons still under investigation, the Lexus lost control and veered into the eastbound lane, colliding head-on with a Honda Civic traveling eastbound.

The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead on the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the Lexus sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Regional Medical Center in San Jose.

The GMC driver fled the scene, and police are currently searching for the suspect. The GMC is a 2015-16 Sierra equipped with a receiver hitch, tow mirrors, and chrome bumpers. It is currently unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.
