LIVERMORE, CA — Twelve high school students from Granada, Livermore and Del Valle high schools are heading back to their campuses next week after spending a month at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as part of the Summer Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Outreach Internship program.
Kayla Galo, Maximiliano Gomez, Cristian Sanchez, Sergio Escamilla, Ella King, Colby Newton, Younus Hamid, Olly Sears, Avni Vachani, Juan Hernandez, Enrique Sanchez and Britney Sandoval were selected from more than 174 applications and recommendations from Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District principals, counselors and teachers to participate in the LLNL summer internship.
Sponsored by the Livermore Lab Foundation, the students worked in engineering, computing and in physical and life sciences as part of a scientific team, with assigned mentors for their projects. The internships culminated with a poster symposium so the students could present their findings to undergraduate and graduate students, community leaders, LLNL employees and local elected officials.
