ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — Alameda County residents will be subject to a curfew order this week as officials attempt to curb looting, arson, violence and vandalism seen across the Bay Area.

The county's order goes into effect beginning 8 p.m. Monday and will remain in effect until 5 a.m. the following day. The curfew expires 5 a.m. Friday.

People are prohibited from being in public during the curfew order, unless they are traveling to or from their home, workplace or medical services. Homeless people and professions such as law enforcement, firefighters and emergency personnel are exempt.

Anyone who violates the curfew could be subject to a $1,000 fine or jail time, according to state law.

The curfew order comes amid looting following demonstrations that have erupted across the country, spurred by the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, who died after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, a 44-year-old white man, knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes. Chauvin pinned Floyd down after arresting him following a call reporting his suspected use of a counterfeit bill at a store. Floyd said he could not breathe during the encounter and had no pulse when he was taken into an ambulance.

The four Minneapolis police department officers at the scene were fired and former officer Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder.
