The longtime District 1 representative helped shape transportation projects across the Bay Area during nearly 25 years in office.

LIVERMORE, CA — Scott Haggerty, who served on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors from 1997 until 2021, died Sunday in Tennessee at age 68, his family confirmed. Haggerty had been hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center following a lung transplant earlier this year, according to his family and reporting from Pleasanton Weekly.

“His final days were spent with our family, reminiscing about life stories, adventures and the beautiful times we had shared together,” Haggerty’s family members wrote on his Facebook page. “While our hearts are broken, we find peace in knowing that he is no longer suffering and for the first time since his operation, he can take a breath of fresh air.”

Haggerty was raised in Fremont, where he served on the Planning Commission, and later moved to Livermore. He was elected in November 1996 to represent District 1 of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, which includes Dublin, Livermore, Sunol, and portions of Pleasanton and Fremont.

Haggerty was especially known for his passion for transportation. He served on the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, Alameda County Transportation Commission, and numerous regional rail commissions and transit authorities. He helped secure billions in funding for roads, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian projects, including express lanes on I-580. He also advocated for the Valley Link extension to Livermore and the Warm Springs BART extension. In 2020, he was named Person of the Year by the California Transportation Foundation.

“During our many years serving together on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, I witnessed firsthand his unwavering commitment to improving transportation, strengthening our communities, and advocating for the residents he represented,” District 4 Supervisor Nate Miley said on Facebook. “His leadership helped shape countless transportation projects and regional initiatives that will benefit generations to come.”

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Supervisor Haggerty,” current District 1 Supervisor David Haubert said in a statement from Alameda County. “His long-standing commitment to our community touched many lives, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, community, and former colleagues as they grieve this loss.”

Services will be held in Tennessee and California, his family said. The Board of Supervisors will also pause to honor his memory at its next meeting on July 14, and all flags at all county buildings will be lowered to half-staff.
