Fiery I-580 Crash Sparks 10-Acre Blaze, SigAlert

LIVERMORE, CA — Firefighters have stopped forward progress on a 10-acre fire that resulted from a car fire on I-580, according to Watch Duty and the California Highway Patrol. 100% containment was reported at 2:29 p.m., Watch Duty said.

At around 1 p.m., four or five vehicles crashed around the I-580/I-205 interchange near Midway Road, according to a CHP incident log. One car went off the roadway and overturned, while at least one vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. The driver was able to exit the vehicle at the moment it became engulfed in flames, according to a CHP Instagram post.

The fire spread to the surrounding grass and fields around the eastbound side of I-580. According to Watch Duty, the fire was first reported around 1:17 p.m., and had spread to 10 acres by 1:19. Forward progress was stopped by 1:24 p.m., Watch Duty reported via Incident Command.

CHP shut down all westbound I-580 lanes at 1:13 p.m., and issued a SigAlert at 1:19 p.m. closing all eastbound I-580 lanes at the I-205 split, according to the log. CHP reported all lanes open around 1:42 p.m., though the agency said at 2:02 p.m. that one lane remained closed while crews mopped up hot spots.
