Las Positas No. 4 In State Poll

The race to the 2027 state title kicks off on Oct. 29. Las Positas will open the season ranked No. 4 in the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCMBCA) Preseason Top 30.

Under head coach James Giacomazzi, the Hawks have made 11 consecutive postseason berths.

Giacomazzi will be trying to get the Hawks to fly to their fourth state tournament appearance this season and win the college's first state men's basketball championship.

Giacomazzi has been impressed with his new team's camaraderie.

"I like the way our guys have jelled, and they genuinely enjoy being around one another," Giacomazzi said on Wednesday, Oct. 21. "With so many new faces this year, we made a conscious effort to spend more time together away from campus so the players could get to know each other beyond the surface level, understand each other's backgrounds, and learn what makes each of them tick."

He added that the "basketball side has come together fairly quickly as they continue to learn and grow as one group. We've also challenged them by scrimmaging against some of the best teams in the state and, in some cases, the country, and so far, they've responded to every challenge."

The Hawks, ranked No. 2 in the North, made a statement in the preseason with a 2-0 record in the 3C2A vs. NJCAA Showdown in Las Vegas.

Fullerton, the defending state champion, will open the season as the CCCMBCA's top-ranked team. The Hornets have won six state titles.
City College of San Francisco ranked No. 2 in the state has won five state championships (2011, 2016, 2018, 2022, 2025).

Giacomazzi is taking nothing for granted. He knows rankings an accolades don't guarantee success on the court.

"Now it's for real, and the games count. We'll have to prove ourselves every night when the lights come on, the games are on the line, and adversity hits. That's when we'll find out who we are as a team, he said.
