Sunset's Extended Student Services Program Gets a Boost

At a regular meeting Wednesday night, the Board of Directors for the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District approved adding a full-time teacher to the Extended Student Services program.

The new teacher would be added to the ESS program, which currently has a waitlist of more than 70 students needing before/after-school child care for the 2012-2013 school year. There are already 115 children enrolled, which is the maximum that can be served with the current space and staffing. Adding a full-time ESS teacher to assist in day-to-day operations, in addition to required part-time staff, will allow LARPD to increase program size from 115 to 140 students. LARPD is also working with the school to provide the additional program space to accommodate the increased staffing and students. Funding to pay for additional staffing will come from the program fees from students added to Sunset ESS.

This will allow LARPD to serve more families through Sunset ESS. The ESS program was established in 1985 under a joint agreement between LARPD and the . The program serves ten Livermore elementary schools and was created to provide a safe and caring place for children to be before and after school and during the summer months. 

Also at the meeting, Livermore resident and LARPD volunteer Don Meeker shared with the Board his substantial progress on creating a database for historical newspaper clippings about the District. He has taken more than 9,000 photographs of scrapbooks with clippings, which will allow LARPD to digitize this historical data. Directors expressed their appreciation for his work on this project.
