Man Armed With Hammer Tries To Rob Livermore Gun Store: LPD

Witnesses told police that a man armed with a hammer tried to rob EastBay Firearms before the owner fatally shot him.

LIVERMORE, CA — A man suspected of trying to rob EastBay Firearms in Livermore was shot dead Sunday, according to the Livermore Police Department.

The deceased, a 28-year-old man from Redwood City, entered the store on First Street Sunday afternoon wearing a mask, gloves, and a hooded sweatshirt pulled over his head, according to a preliminary investigation from the LPD. A witness told police in a statement that the man attempted to rob the store by taking a firearm, while armed with a hammer.

The owner of EastBay Firearms fired two rounds, fatally wounding the suspect, police said.

Just after 2:30 pm Sunday, emergency crews arrived and performed life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead on the scene. Five customers were in the store at the time, though none were injured.

Police say the store owner is cooperating with authorities and believe he acted in self-defense, and thus is not currently a suspect. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
