UPDATE: One Dead, Five Injured After Car Drives Through Livermore Gym

Police are investigating the fatal morning collision. LifeStyleRx will remain closed until further notice.

One person has died and five others were injured Tuesday morning after an elderly driver inadvertently drove her car through a gym in Livermore, police officials said.

According to police, the 80-year-old female driver, who was attempting to park her car, likely had “pedal confusion” and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, causing her to drive through the front glass doors of the LifestyleRX gym around 6:26 a.m.

“A 49-year-old Livermore woman has since died as a result of her injuries,” Officer Traci Rebiejo confirmed.

According to a statement released by police Tuesday afternoon, the 2013 Mercedes accelerated forward and the vehicle traveled nearly 70 feet through the ground floor of the building, eventually colliding into an exercise classroom. Those injured were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The woman eventually succumbed to her injuries, and died at the hospital while being treated. Neither the driver nor the victim’s names have been released.

The gym was open for business and occupied at the time of the collision. Rebiejo says the police department received multiple 911 calls reporting the collision early this morning. The gym, located at 1119 East Stanley in Livermore, is closed due to the damage and ensuing investigation and will remain closed until further notice.

The investigating officer does not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor with this collision.

LifeStyleRx is a 70,000-square-foot gym and wellness center that is part of the Stanford Health Care - ValleyCare system, according to its website.
