Celebrate Earth Day in Livermore
Here's a rundown of Earth Day events and other eco-friendly celebrations in town.

Earth Day was established in 1970 to force environmental issues onto the national agenda and now is celebrated by more than 200 countries.
Earth Day is celebrated on Friday, with the aim of spreading environmental awareness and information to better protect our world.
Livermore is making Earth Day a local affair with a roster of events. There are plenty of eco-friendly events in town after the Earth Day celebration, too.

Event: Concannon Conservancy

Take a complimentary tour of the vineyard and participate in conservancy wine tastings focused on the winery’s sustainable wine-growing and eco-friendly practices.

Event: Taste Big House Wines on Earth Day

Taste Big House Wines at Underdog Wine Bar and learn more about its efforts to reduce waste through alternative packaging. By using wine casks instead of glass bottles, Big House Wines reduces packaging waste by at least 85 percent and carbon emissions by 55 percent.

Event: Good Friday, Earth Day and the Bomb: The Cross in the Midst of Creation
When: 6:45 a.m. Friday
Where:
The intersection of Vasco and Patterson Pass roads.
Opening music will begin at 6:45 a.m., followed by worship at 7 and then the procession to the gate and acts of witness. From 10 a.m. to noon, there will be a community gathering to share work and actions at , 4743 East Ave. Light refreshments will be provided.

Eco-Friendly Activities After Earth Day:
Event:
When: May 1, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: 1499 Winding Stream Drive in Livermore
Tour 50 gardens that are good for the environment. The featured gardens are pesticide-free, conserve water, provide habitat for wildlife and contain at least 50 percent native plants. Registration is required for the self-drive tour and volunteers are needed. If you plan to volunteer, please register before Sunday.

Event: Recycle Your Batteries
When: Daily during open business hours

1518 First St., Livermore, or at the Plaza 580 Shopping Center, 4326 Las Positas Road.
Recycle your batteries correctly in order to help the Earth. Many people don’t know this, but batteries are not supposed to be thrown away with your other trash because of the chemicals in them. Plus, they are recyclable. RadioShack takes your old, reusable batteries and recycles them. It also collects used cell phones for recycling. Donated cell phones will be refurbished and resold when possible.

Keep gently used baby, maternity, children and teen’s clothing out of landfills by swapping them at the peace.love.swap kid’s clothing and gear swap. Parents who register for the event should bring gently used kid’s clothing and gear to swap. From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., parents can play with their kids at the venue, visit with vendors and enter a free raffle. From 12:30 to 2 p.m., parents can pick out items brought in by other participants. RSVP via the Facebook invite.

Another way to participate in saving the Earth is to support businesses that use technology and practices to achieve sustainability. Wente Family Estates recently achieved a Certification of Sustainability. The winery continues to try new methods to become even more eco-friendly.
