Chabot Baseball Takes Dramatic Win On Coffey RBI in Opener
Gladiators split two games in series with Santa Rosa to christen 2019 season.
The Chabot College baseball team split a two-game series with Santa Rosa Junior College to open the season. Chabot opened with a come-from-behind, 7-6 win in Hayward on Jan. 25. The Gladiators also dropped a 2-1 decision on Jan. 26.
Trailing 6-4 in the opener, the Gladiators’ pulled even on a clutch two-run homer by Gerald Nervis in the bottom of the eighth. That set the stage for Cole Coffey’s game-winning RBI single in the ninth that drove in Keldon Hunter.
Nervis had three RBIs and Tim O'Dalaigh launched a two-run homer in the second inning to put Chabot ahead 2-1 in the back-and-forth contest. Chabot starter Chris Tonna scattered six hits and allowed one earned run over 4.0 innings. Reliever Logan Caton got the win.
In the 2-1 loss, relievers Augusto Pineda and Carson Quintana were both effective. Catcher Russell Stevenson was 2 for 4. Shortstop Manny Garcia had an RBI single in the eighth.
