E. Coli in Celery Blend Prompts Huge Recall of Products

E. coli in Costco’s “Chicken Salad made with Rotisserie Chicken” has been traced to a California company. The tainted chicken salad has sickened at least 19 people in seven states. Two have developed kidney failure but no deaths have been reported.

The number of people sickened may mushroom today or in the days to come--tests have linked the E. coli to Taylor Farms of Tracy. The company is recalling a Celery and Onion Diced Blend used by supermarkets, convenience stores, Costco, Walmart, Target, Starbucks and others to make deli items. The blend was also used in Thanksgiving stuffing and relish trays.

In all, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of 71 items, spanning from wraps and potato salad, to Asian and Italian inspired items.

According to the FDA:

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a bacterium that causes a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.
