Firefighters Rescue Pet Chinchilla During Blaze in Livermore Home

Firefighters this morning responded to a structure fire in Livermore that displaced a resident. Firefighters from the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department and the Alameda County Fire Department responded at 1:51 a.m. to a report of a structure fire in the 5600 block of Oakmont Circle. Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-family home with the garage on fire.

The only resident of the home had escaped the fire before firefighters arrived. The fire was extinguished by 2:30 a.m., firefighters said. When the fire broke out, the resident of the home was sleeping and woke to the sound of the smoke detector inside the residence. He opened his bedroom door to find the house filled with smoke and saw the glow from the fire, firefighters said. He was able to escape the residence through a bedroom window, and he called 911. The fire was contained to the garage, but the home was deemed uninhabitable due to damage sustained in the blaze. Firefighters were able to save a pet chinchilla from the residence.

There were no reported injuries in the blaze. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the damage to the residence is estimated at $130,000, firefighters said.
