Fireman Who Helped Rescue Distraught Woman From Overpass Earns Firefighter of the Year Award

The Livermore-Pleasanton firefighter was recognized by Tri-Valley Knights Of Columbus during an awards ceremony.

PLEASANTON, CA — Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department Engineer Gregg Stanford was recently given the Firefighter of the Year Award by the Tri-Valley Knights Of Columbus. Stanford was part of a dramatic rescue of a distraught, suicidal woman discovered perched on the outside of the chain link fence located at the highest point of the First Street overpass in April of 2015.

Fire crews and police officers risked falling from the overpass in order to secure her to the fencing about 30 to 50 feet above the Union Pacific train tracks in Livermore.

Stanford, who has worked for the department for almost three decades, was given the award during the annual Red, Blue and Gold Awards Banquet.
