Four Small Planes Escorted By Fighter Jets Away From Super Bowl

Four small planes violated temporary flight restrictions enacted around Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Sunday for the Super Bowl, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

All four passed through the outer ring of the restricted area, between 10 and 32 miles away from the stadium, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.

They included two Cessnas that were escorted out of the area by fighter jets and landed at Livermore Municipal Airport, North American Aerospace Defense Command Maj. Katrina Andrews said.

The other aircrafts were a Beechcraft BE35 that landed at an unknown location and a Van’s RV-6 that landed in Paso Robles, Gregor said.

The pilots apparently had not read a notice posted by the FAA that instructed them to avoid the area around the Super Bowl, Andrews said. FAA and NORAD officials did not immediately provide any information about what consequences the pilots may be facing.

The Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10 in the Super Bowl.
