Granada High Student Seriously Hurt; Another Arrested After Lunchtime Brawl In Livermore

"The circumstances of the incident were heinous," a school official said, adding classmates filming the chaos was disturbing.

LIVERMORE, CA – One female student was seriously injured and another girl arrested after a lunchtime fight broke out Monday at Granada High School in Livermore, according to police.

"This is just terrible. What are we doing wrong?" a parent wrote to Patch after the incident.

While the Livermore Police Department did not identify, give ages or details of the individuals involved, the agency did confirm one arrest was made.

Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District Superintendent of Schools Kelly Bowers confirmed one student was "seriously injured " during Monday's lunch in the quad, despite school staff and campus supervisors responding "within seconds."

"While the circumstances of the incident were heinous," Bowers said, "what is equally disturbing is the reaction some people have had about it. Far too many students were crowding around, filming the incident, and discussing it on social media afterwards. While the situation at lunch was very upsetting, the misrepresentation of the events and the speculation on social media were also very troubling and hurtful."

Bowers encouraged those with posts to remove them as social media "is not a problem-solving forum," also urging parents to speak with their children on appropriate actions during a crisis or when someone is hurt.

"Social media is not a problem-solving forum; adult intervention is how we keep our kids safe," Bowers said. "My administrative staff and I are always available if you need to contact us. ... Rest assured, student safety is our utmost priority."

"This is not who we are as a school," Bowers added. "We need to show we are a caring community that respects one another."

Bowers said a "thorough investigation followed by strong legal and district consequences" will follow.

The concerned parent who wrote to Patch said: "This is why I was so adamant that my children attend a private school for as long as possible. Stuff like this didn't happen there. There's videos swarming the school about it and everyone is laughing.

"It should be a zero violence policy. The aggressor should be expelled and prosecuted. Our children should be able to go to school, get an education and just be kids without having to worry about this stuff."
