Las Positas To Offer Ethnic Studies Course, Meets CSU Requirement

The new "Introduction to Race and Ethnicity" course offered this fall will meet California State University's requirement for a degree.

Press release from Las Positas College:

Las Positas College's (LPC) new "Introduction to Race and Ethnicity" course offered this fall will meet the new California State University's (CSU) ethnic studies requirement for a bachelor's degree.

"Introduction to Race and Ethnicity" examines the cultural, political and economic practices and institutions that support or challenge racism and racial and ethnic inequalities in the United States. The course, offered for the first time this fall at LPC, will satisfy CSU's requirement that all students earn at least three credits in an ethnic studies class prior to graduating with a bachelor's degree that focuses on Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans and Latinx Americans. LPC students will be required to take this course if they wish to earn an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) using the CSU General Education-Breadth pattern. Students can also complete this course after transferring to a CSU.

Kristina Whalen, vice president of Academic Services at LPC, said the college is proud to offer this new course not only because it helps students who plan to transfer to a CSU, but because the college is committed to helping its students become well-rounded citizens who have some understanding of race and ethnicity in the U.S.

"Las Positas College has a long history of offering a curriculum that promotes the development of strong analytical skills," Whalen said. "Ethnic Studies instruction enhances a nuanced understanding of the complexities of U.S. society and prepares students to be critical thinkers, informed citizens and competitive career seekers."
