Las Positas Star Michael Hayes Soars To All-State Honor

Report by Arion Armeniakos: Freshman guard out of West High-Tracy finished No. 3 in state scoring for Coast-North runner-up Hawks

Las Positas College freshman guard Michael Hayes received a major award to cap off a brilliant debut season. The dynamic West High-Tracy graduate was selected to the Northern California All-State first team.

A prolific athlete and dedicated teammate, Hayes led the Hawks into the playoffs for the fourth time in as many years under head coach James Giacomazzi.

The Hawks (21-7, 9-3 Coast-North) enjoyed their most successful season ever in the powerful conference. Hayes averaged 23.7 points per game to rank No. 3 in the state, and his 9.7 rebounds per game placed him at No. 13 in California.

“I think Michael has had one heck of a season. In fact, he was in the discussion for NorCal Player of the Year. He was #1 in scoring and rebounding in the conference, so that's a huge accomplishment for him,” Giacomazzi said. “We knew as a staff that Michael would do very well here at LPC because of his game and our style of play, but we certainly were happy to see our projections play out in reality.”

The high-flying, left-handed guard caught the attention of basketball aficionados nationwide. His stats and video clips of flashy plays often made it around all the popular social media platforms.

But Giacomazzi believes that this is only the beginning for the academic-minded freshman who continues to develop his game and prepare for an inevitable transfer to a higher level.

“We think (Hayes) can be even better next year. Not specifically with his numbers, but with growth in his overall skillset,” Giacomazzi said. “He has already acknowledged that he wants to work on his non-dominant hand dribbling and finishing, as well as 3-point shot consistency this off season.

“Now, he will also need to think about how his game translates against high major division I players and not rest on his success at this level,” the coach continued. “As those aspects of his game continue to improve … Watch out!”
