LIVERMORE, CA — Livermore businesses may temporarily expand into outdoor areas to accommodate al fresco diners, retailers or curbside pick-up services.

The changes could result in street closures, the creation of delivery and pick-up areas, or combined seating areas, Livermore officials said Tuesday in a letter to the community.

"Let’s continue to support Livermore businesses and care for those who need help during these difficult times," they wrote. "We are Livermore and we will get through this together."

The announcement comes as businesses in the Bay Area and across the country look for ways to serve patrons while maintaining social distancing as restrictions related to the new coronavirus are relaxed.

Other California cities have unveiled similar plans. KGO reported Monday that the City of Pleasanton was considering a similar program and in talks with the Pleasanton Downtown Association.

Businesses were allowed to apply for the free temporary outdoor use permits beginning May 12, city officials said. Business owners must submit a description and drawing of the proposed outdoor venue, and must maintain commercial general liability and employer liability insurances covering up to $1 million for injury, damage or disease, according to the permit requirements. Venues serving liquor must also have liquor liability insurance.
