Have You Been to Deacon Dave's Christmas Display in Livermore Yet?

Follow the Glow! Livermore Christmas Display opened Friday, December 5 through January 1.

The biggest and best holiday display in Livermore – and maybe the whole Bay Area - opened on Friday, December 5 at 6:30 p.m.

A holiday tradition now in its 33rd year, this year’s display is sure to put everyone in the holiday spirit and bring back Christmas memories. The front yard of Deacon Dave Rezendes’ home at 352 Hillcrest Ave in Livermore, Casa del Pomba, is visited by tens of thousands of guests each year. For the latest updates on what is happening, including Santa’s visiting hours, special guests, and behind the scenes trivia, like Casa del Pomba on Facebook.

The theme each year changes, and is always kept a secret until opening night ceremonies. On December 5th, the home and yard will be dark as a candlelight procession makes its way down the blocked off street. Members of the community are welcome to join the procession which will feature the St. Michael’s choir leading Deacon Dave and Santa and Mrs. Claus to the home. Livermore Mayor John Marchand will be on stage awaiting the procession, and another choir will be at the home to entertain those waiting. There is a blessing of the lights, the theme is announced, and the lights are turned on. At that time, guests are invited to walk through the yard. It is a spectacular evening, a perfect way to get in the holiday spirit. Members of the non-profit group Good News Bears will help Deacon celebrate his special night by serving refreshments. Visitors wishing to support the group are invited to bring a new stuffed animal or cash donation to help them meet the ever-increasing need for “stuffed love” at shelters, hospitals, and emergency services. In 2013, the theme was “Santa’s Castle.” Two magnificent towers flanked the driveway. As you walked between them, you were transported to the North Pole and got glimpses of life with Santa. The big man himself was working in his office, checking his list. Mrs. Claus surprised elves in the kitchen after they had made a huge mess baking. Flour was everywhere! Another elf snuck into the Claus’ bedroom and was jumping on the 4 poster bed. On the other side of the yard, Ace’s Sleigh Garage was busy fixing a sleigh that had obviously been used for training and had a slight accident! The elves in the mail room were busy sorting all the letters into nice and naughty piles, and the reindeer were in their stables filling up on lots of hay.

Although the theme is a secret each year until opening, you can count on lots of fun, memories stirred up, and even, as many guests have told crew members, a spiritual feeling from the lights and love displayed. Each light is a prayer for peace, and visitors have shared stories of how the display has affected them. From finding peace in their heart after a loved one has passed, to the strength to cope with debilitating illness, to the power to escape an abusive situation, the display seems to have a power to affect guests in many ways, but the most powerful is the spirit of Christmas and love.

How many lights this year? What is the theme? You’ll have to stop by and find out! More and more LED lights are added each year. This year, each light is not only a prayer for peace, but for our first responders, who are always there when we need them. Approximately 30 volunteers work hard throughout the year to put on the display. They are from many faiths, and welcome guests of all faiths. Be sure to walk through to gain the total experience. The crew members love to share the spirit of the holidays, and are often on hand to answer any questions. Just look for anyone wearing a red “Casa del Pomba” ball cap or jacket.

Santa loves to visit, and makes times in his busy schedule to stop by often during the season. Mrs. Claus loves the beautiful lights and story that is told every year, too, so she often joins Santa!

Deacon Dave opens his yard from the opening on December 5th until January 1st. The hours are 6 pm to 9 pm Sunday through Thursday, and from 6 pm until 10 pm Friday and Saturday. The gates may be closed during inclement weather, although every effort is made to leave the lights glowing. There is no admission charge. All the donations collected in the coin toss, ponds, and at the door are for Santa’s Secret Service. This program has provided a visiting Santa, carolers, and gifts to area nursing homes, shelters, and hospitals for over 50 years. Visit www.casadelpomba.com for more information on the display, Santa’s Secret Service, and Deacon Dave’s family history. A big thank you to Unforgettable Memories for the opening night sound system; Good News Bears for serving refreshments; and the fantastic crew who makes it all happen.
