Livermore High Part of White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics

Green Engineering Academy Recognized as Innovative Model Program

Livermore High School’s award-winning Green Engineering Academy was recently recognized by the White House as one of 230 programs in the United States that are creating opportunities and closing the educational attainment gap for Hispanics. The program was highlighted in a White House press conference on September 15, 2015 and is listed in a national catalog of outstanding programs for Hispanic students.

“The White House’s recognition of our successful Green Engineering Academy is a true honor,” said Kelly Bowers, LVJUSD Superintendent. “Our Green Engineering Academy develops students’ ability to think critically, work collaboratively, design creatively, and carry themselves with a strong sense of character so that they can thrive in the 21st century.”

The White House Initiative of Bright Spots in Hispanic Education National Online Catalog (www.ed.gov/HispanicInitiative) recognizes excellent educational programs across the United States that address the disparities faced by the local Hispanic community. The initiative seeks to spur innovation and encourage collaboration between programs that support closing the achievement gap.

Livermore High School’s Green Engineering Academy has also been recognized regionally as a model program for its high level of innovation and student engagement. It was awarded a prestigious Golden Bell award from the California School Boards Association in 2012 – 2013. The Green Engineering Academy is a California Partnership Academy that incorporates integrated academic and career technical education, business partnerships, mentoring, and internships for high school students. The program focuses on green engineering practices, such as generating and storing renewable energy, recycling, energy efficient product manufacturing, and natural and sustainable manufacturing.
