Livermore Police Warn of Mail Theft From Community Boxes

Police say suspects often steal mail to commit identity theft.

LIVERMORE, CA: Livermore Police officials are asking for the public's help solving several recent mail theft cases.
According to a statement released by police, suspects have been targeting community mailboxes throughout the city.

"The typical reason that mailboxes are broken into is for the criminal to be able to perpetuate identity theft," officials said in a statement. "Personal information can be gathered in a variety of ways, and mail theft is a popular method of doing so."

Police urge residents to use letter slots at the post office to drop outgoing mail. They discourage leaving outbound bill payments in the box in front of your home. Residents are encouraged to collect their mail and deliveries frequently and notify the post office when going out of town.

LPD asks the community to report suspicious behavior occurring near community mailboxes by calling LPD Dispatch at 925-371-4987. Officials also ask any witnesses or victims of mail theft to come forward.
