Livermore Teen Arrested Following Crash That Killed Unborn Child: CHP

LIVERMORE, CA — A 17-year-old from Livermore was arrested Friday in connection with an accident that injured six people and killed the unborn child of a pregnant woman, according to the California Highway Patrol.

On Friday at around 9:11 p.m., CHP officers arrived to break up an auto racing sideshow in Rio Linda, a town just north of Sacramento. 100 cars and pedestrians were blocking an intersection, according to a report from the CHP’s North Sacramento office.

Officers initiated a traffic stop on a Honda Accord, driven by the 17-year-old suspect, but he failed to stop and drove through a red light, police say. In the intersection, the Accord collided with a nearby Honda Civic. The driver of the Civic, a pregnant 28-year-old, was transported to the hospital with major injuries, and her unborn child was killed, police say. The passenger in her car was also taken to the hospital.

The 17-year-old, whose name is not being released because he is a minor, sustained minor injuries and was booked into Sacramento County Juvenile Hall, CHP said. He has been charged with multiple felonies, including reckless evasion of police and evasion by driving in the opposite direction of traffic. No murder charges have been publicly filed as of Tuesday.

The three passengers in his car also sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital. CHP said that one passenger was trapped and had to be extricated, but did not specify which one.
