LPC Veterans First Program Receives New Funding
The funds will be used to support veterans as they transition to civilian life.
From LPC: Las Positas College (LPC) has received funding to support their Veterans First Program.
The California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office allocated $8.5 million to 59 community colleges that have veterans resource centers, including LPC. The funds will be used to support veterans as they transition to civilian life.
The Las Positas College Veterans First Program applied for a competitive Veterans Resource Center state grant provided by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office. The goal of the one-time funding is to support California community colleges that have no or limited Veterans Resource Centers and to develop, expand, or increase programs and services available to veteran students. The Las Positas College Veterans First Program was awarded $200,000 for a two-year period beginning in October 2018.
LPC plans to use the funds to help increase awareness, access, and usage of student support services including, but not limited to, the Disabled Student Programs & Services (DSPS), Extended Opportunity Programs & Services (EOPS), Financial Aid, and Tutorial Center. The new funding will also allow the Las Positas College Veterans First Program to augment Operation Gateway, the two-day intensive new student orientation for veterans, provide additional academic support services for students completing gateway courses, and improve case management to promote student success."
"LPC's Veterans First program began as a small group of veterans and has grown into a large group who are dedicated to helping their peers succeed," said Roanna Bennie, LPC interim president. "We are honored that our state Chancellor's Office recognizes the commitment of our faculty, staff and students. They are working each day to help our veteran students succeed. These new funds will allow us to continue to support them in so many other ways."
