Man Fatally Shoots Self After Exchanging Gunfire With Police
The shooting occurred outside of the Livermore Police Department early this morning.

LIVERMORE, CA: An apparently suicidal man killed himself after a brief exchange of gunfire with police officers outside of the Livermore Police Department early this morning, police said.
Prior to the shooting, officers had responded to a report of a missing suicidal man armed with a firearm but did not initially locate him.
Then at about 3 a.m., officers approaching the back parking lot of police headquarters at 1110 S. Livermore Ave. noticed the man sitting in his vehicle just outside of the lot's gate, police said.

As the officers approached the car, they saw the man was armed with a shotgun and immediately retreated backwards, according to police.
As the officers retreated, the man fired the shotgun, causing damage to the back window of his vehicle. According to police, the officers believed the suspect was firing at them, which prompted an officer to return fire.

After trying to call out to the man and getting no response, officers eventually approached and discovered he was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to police.
No officers were injured in the incident. The name of the man who died has not been released.
Police said no other details were immediately available and that the department planned to provide an update at 10 a.m.
