Motorcyclist Killed on Altamont Pass Identified

The big rig driver who hit the motorcyclist still has not been identified.

A motorcyclist who was struck and killed by a big-rig Thursday evening in a hit-and-run collision east of Livermore has been identified by the Alameda County coroner’s bureau as 33-year-old Benjamin Moreno of Mountain House.

The California Highway Patrol said Moreno was driving his motorcycle east on Altamont Pass Road just west of Grant Line Road at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when he lost control, fell to the ground and was struck by the tires of an eastbound big-rig, which did not stop after the collision.

Moreno died of his injuries at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.

CHP spokesman Officer Derek Reed said today that the cause of the collision remains under investigation and investigators believe the big-rig driver might not have realized that the truck hit Moreno.

“Sometimes big-rig drivers know when they’ve hit someone and sometimes they don’t,” Reed said.
