“To Die in Livermore,” a thriller by Livermore resident and award-winning author John G. Bluck, is a story about murder, espionage and a fusion-powered, nuclear rocket. Rough Edges Press will publish this book on July 14.
“I chose my hometown, Livermore, Calif., as the setting for this seventh volume of my Luke Ryder series of novels because visualizing the story unfold in a familiar place was easy,” Bluck said.
Protagonist Luke Ryder is a Kentucky deputy sheriff who is called west to work with the FBI to investigate the murder of a Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory engineer. Because the victim is working on the design of a nuclear rocket linked to national defense, the engineer’s homicide sets off alarms at the highest levels of the U.S. intelligence community.

“Bluck’s background in journalism, the military and NASA comes through in the story,” according to Rough Edges Press Managing Production Editor Rachel Del Grosso. “It gives the book a real sense of authenticity.”
Bluck was an army journalist at Ft. Lewis, Wash., during the Vietnam War. In the 1970s he was a news film cameraman covering homicides and bank robberies for WMAL-TV (now WJLA-TV) in Washington, D.C. He also filmed political and Watergate scandal stories. Bluck later joined NASA and wrote and produced science documentaries for television. After writing articles and press releases for the agency, he became a NASA spokesman. In recent years, the Public Safety Writers Association presented Bluck with awards for two of his novels and two of his short stories.
