Livermore Service Organization Helps Build Beds For Children In Need

LIVERMORE, CA — The Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) Livermore Chapter is proud to announce its partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) as part of this year’s Ultimate Gift Project, with a shared mission to ensure that no child in the community sleeps on the floor.

On December 6, 2025, 76 YMSL moms and sons came together for a powerful day of service, building 32 complete bed frames and repairing an additional 15 for local children in need. In addition to the beds, members of the chapter created handmade cards with encouraging messages to accompany each delivery, adding a personal touch to every gift.

To better understand the impact of their service, YMSL’s young men participated in a meaningful reflection exercise by sleeping on the floor the night before the project discussion. The experience helped them empathize with children who go without a bed every night.

Brady Kohn, one of the participating sons, shared, “The hardest part of sleeping on the floor was being able to fall asleep and have a good night's rest, and waking up and feeling achy and not rested at all. I can't imagine going to school every day—it would only get worse every single night. I take for granted my pillow and my comfy bed and being able to fall asleep every night and waking up feeling rested.”

The project also included a successful bedding drive, collecting at least 175 bedding items to ensure each child receives not only a bed, but a comfortable and complete sleeping setup.

Many of the young men reflected on both the skills they learned and the relationships they strengthened through the project. Aiden McEneany said, “I learned how to use an electric saw. It was a good bonding experience with me and my mom, and I feel like these kids will have a better time sleeping now that they’re not on the ground.”

Easton White summed up the heart of the project, saying, “I hope that when the kids see the beds it makes them happy and they know that people are out there trying to make things better for them.”

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national nonprofit dedicated to building and delivering beds to children who otherwise sleep on floors, couches, or in unsafe conditions. Locally, the organization serves more than 4,000 children in need.

“Our mission is simple: no kid sleeps on the floor in our town,” said Daniel Curtis, Chapter President of SHP’s Alameda County Chapter. “If a child in our community needs a bed, we want their family to know they can request one.”
