'Operation Backpack' is Sandia's way of thanking military families for their sacrifice in service.

LIVERMORE, CA — Employees with Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore recently collected more than 200 backpacks to donate to children of local military families.

“This year’s Operation Backpack has been stunningly successful,” Sandia Associate Laboratories Director Dori Ellis said. “The generosity of the whole division, including Carlsbad and Albuquerque, has been beyond anyone’s wildest imagination.”

This is the fifth year employees have adopted kids as recipients of Operation Backpack as a way to thank military families for their sacrifice in service. The giving drive has expanded to Carlsbad and Albuquerque, and the California Laboratory.

“Excitement for the program was so high, that Sandians made 28 extra backpacks donated that can be used by local military bases for students that transfer in the middle of the school year,” a Sandia spokesperson said in a statement. “The backpacks were delivered to the Family Centers at Camp Parks Reserve Forces Training Area, Travis Air Force Base, and Moffett Federal Airfield.”

The program also receives significant support from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Veterans in Energy, Technology, and Science (VETS).
