LIVERMORE, CA — An out-of-control motorhome crashed into 19 cars in slow-moving traffic on I-580 near Altamont Pass, the California Highway Patrol confirmed. One suspect is in custody as of Tuesday morning. CHP does not yet have information about how many drivers, if any, were injured.
On Monday evening just after 6 p.m., CHP received reports that a white RV had crashed into multiple vehicles on 580, CHP Officer Robert Purl told Patch.
At 6:08, a CHP officer traveling eastbound noticed the RV traveling at approximately 35 mph, passing cars on the right shoulder. The officer observed the RV crash into another car without stopping at the offramp to North Flynn Road.

Video footage sent to KTVU shows one car flipped over, and multiple cars with significant damage. A viewer told KTVU that the car hit a number of cars while speeding along the shoulder of the road, then turned into traffic and hit more cars.
The CHP officer initiated a traffic stop on the RV, but it did not yield, Purl said. The officer chased the RV down the North Flynn Road offramp to Carroll Road to Altamont Pass Road through light traffic. The RV became disabled at eastbound Altamont Pass Road near Carroll Road, and a stand-off ensued.
