Toxic Algae Closes Del Valley Regional Park Near Livermore

Memorial Day weekend typically draws swimmers to Del Valle Regional Park but green algae presents danger to visitors.

LIVERMORE, CA — Swimming and wading have been banned at Del Valle Regional Park near Livermore amid blue-green algae blooms, which can be toxic, officials said.

Cyanobacteria was detected in the reservoir, prompting officials to release a Danger/Closure Advisory. No swimming will be permitted and dogs are to be kept out of the water, according to a water quality notice from the East Bay Regional Park District.

The harmful and toxic algae can range from bright green, dark green, blue-green, orange and brown. They can be found in water columns and can be seen floating detached at the surface of some swimming holes or growing along the bottom of river beds.
