Do you celebrate? So far, 45.5% take a bah-humbug approach, while another 45.5% plan on a Valentine's Day with all the trimmings. 4.5% each plan on celebrating Galentine's Day or Singles Awareness Day.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- Do you own a diesel-powered vehicle "weighing over 14,000 pounds and built before 2010?" You're banned from operating it on Long Beach roads — or anywhere in California — as of January 1. This regulation was signed off on in 2008 by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Officials estimate that this may ban around 200,000 vehicles statewide. "The law will be enforced by DMV denying registrations to non-compliant trucks and buses, and CARB's enforcement unit will conduct audits of commercial fleets that may result in citations." The only way around this law is proving that your engine was replaced with one built after 2010 or that you travel fewer than 1,000 miles per year. (SFGATE)
- The rain and subsequent flooding caused problems for commuters on Thursday morning. Three feet of standing water caused a closure of the I-710. Drivers had to get off at Artesia Boulevard. You couldn't get back on until later that morning. Besides that, the on and off ramps of the southbound I-405 at Cherry Avenue had to remain closed until noon because of flooding. The problem there had to do with the "pump house having electrical issues." (Patch, Caltrans District 7)
- How's the Broadstone Promenade project at 127 East Broadway coming along? We learned on Thursday that "wood framing is starting to rise above the concrete podium." When the project broke ground in the middle of 2021, estimates suggested an opening date "sometime in 2023." It's unclear if there's an update to this timeline. (LA Urbanize)
- Save the date! After a two-year break, the Martin Luther King, Jr. parade and celebration is coming back on January 14. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and Anaheim Street. The celebration starts at noon at Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Lemon Avenue. "The park celebration will include a main stage with performances, a health and wellness area, a youth area, food and merchandise vendors, and information booths." (City of Long Beach)
- The Waters Edge Winery has a new location! You may remember that we talked about the company shutting down its location at 217 Pine Avenue, due to failing negotiations with the landlord. On Wednesday, the winery and bistro reopened at 149 Linden Avenue, on "the first floor of the historic Broadlind Hotel building on the corner of East Broadway and Linden."
