🌱 74,000 Ballots Left To Count + CANstruction At Trademark Brewing

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Long Beach.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, friends; today is Father's Day, which had an uphill battle getting recognized until President Nixon made it a national holiday in 1972! It's me, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily. Here's what you need to know about what's happening in town today...

Some runoffs are still being decided as ballot counting continues. CANstruction is displaying its first ever pet edition. Finally, will the City Council temporarily waive pet licensing fees?

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and pleasant. High: 76 Low: 61.

📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in Long Beach. If the police are called, you may have to pay as much as $20,000 in response costs plus citation fines of $1,000. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 12.3% don't want fireworks, 77% want "safe and sane fireworks," and 0.5% don't care one way or the other while another 10.2% want to buy what they choose.)

Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Did you know that election officials are still counting votes from the June 7 primary? As of Friday's update, first district (CD1) incumbent Mary Zendejas is avoiding a November runoff against Mariela Salgado by only 50 votes. It is unclear if CD5's Megan Kerr and CD9's Joni Ricks-Oddie can avoid a runoff, too. With "about 74,000 ballots left to process," it is possible. In CD3, Kristina Duggan is still ahead, but may now face Kailee Caruso rather than Nima Novin in November. There are 22 votes separating the contenders for second place. (Long Beach Post)
  2. The inaugural CANstruction Pet Edition exhibition is going on right now, until June 26, at Trademark Brewing on 233 East Anaheim Street. It is a pet food and fundraiser for Sparky & the Gang. Take a look at what volunteer engineers can build with cans! (CANstruction Long Beach)
  3. Speaking of pets, on Tuesday, the City Council will discuss a resolution to offer "a temporary amnesty program waiving first-time pet licensing fee and late penalty fee for an expired pet license from June 24 through August 23." Officials reason that this temporary amnesty will make it easier for pet owners to care for the animals while also registering them. As you know, registering a cat or dog helps return the animal to you if lost. (Legistar)
  4. Is your bartender certified? Back in 2017, the legislature passed AB 1221, which requires "bartenders, wait staff and managers at establishments serving alcohol beverages to be certified by Aug. 31." A two-hour examination follows a four-hour class. In L.A. County, there are 10,605 affected venues. At The Auld Dubliner and Joe Jost's, management doesn't worry. "Considering the societal impact of serving an intoxicated patron, having your employees certified is the prudent thing to do." (Beachcomber)
  5. Mark your calendars! Midsummer Scream is coming to the Long Beach Convention Center on July 30. Hear from those who grew up with the horror genre's greats, such as Vincent Price or Bela Lugosi. See Metallica's lead guitarist moderate the presentation! (OC Breeze)
