Up and at 'em, Long Beach! Here's everything you need to know to get this Friday started off right.

Another day, another shooting in LB. Also, the Mayor doubles down on COVID-19 vaccinations. Finally, did the air smell like chlorine yesterday?

First, today's weather: Partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 76 Low: 64.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. The latest LB shooting took place late Wednesday night in the 900 block of Alamitos Avenue. An adult male was taken to the hospital. Another shooting took place just a mile north in the 1700 block of Alamitos Avenue in March 2021. (LBReport)
  2. With COVID hospitalizations increasing from 37 to 138 in just four weeks, Mayor Robert Garcia is tweaking the rules. Facemasks are required at outdoor mega events and indoor public settings. Proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test results are also required for indoor mega events of 1,000 or more people and the LB Grand Prix. This rule takes effect 9/20. (Spectrum News 1)
  3. Yesterday, Willow Street was closed in both directions between the 605 Freeway and Studebaker Road. The LBFD responded to a hazardous materials incident at the Water Reclamation Plant, 7400 Willow Street. An error resulted in the release of chlorine gas. (LB Post)
  4. The LBFD now has two shark navigators that divers use to locate people and objects in low-visibility water conditions. They use sonar technology that could come into play if a rapid diver unit cannot make contact within the first five to ten minutes. An add-on will be used later in the fall. (ABC 7)
  5. Peacock & Co. is a LB plant store that survived the pandemic and is expanding its hours. And, because the company never got to celebrate its grand opening, it will do so on September 4 – after being in business at the current location for a year. Visit the store on that day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 306 Cerritos Avenue, and join the party! (Peacock & Co)
