Weather forecast:
1. Video: Shark Chases Surfer, Ushering In CA's Shark Summer (patch.com) — Long Beach readers will recognize Cal State Long Beach shark expert Chris Lowe warning that unusually warm waters and a possible strong El Niño could bring more sharks close to Southern California beaches. Recent aggressive encounters from Santa Barbara to Orange County, plus CSULB Shark Lab research, suggest sharks are often near swimmers, though actual attacks remain rare.
2. San Francisco made $7.4 million from speed camera fines so far (nypost.com) — Long Beach is part of California’s new speed camera pilot, following San Francisco’s early results showing fewer speeders and millions in fines. While the data comes from San Francisco, the same automated enforcement rules will apply in Long Beach, aiming to cut serious crashes by targeting drivers going 10 mph or more over the limit.
3. Rocket Lab launches JAXA tech demo satellites with deployable antenna and imaging payloads (militaryaerospace.com) — Rocket Lab, headquartered in Long Beach has successfully launched eight experimental satellites for Japan’s space agency from its New Zealand site, underscoring the city’s role in the global space industry. The mission tests compact imaging systems and deployable origami-style antennas, highlighting how Long Beach-based aerospace innovation supports cutting-edge environmental monitoring and low Earth orbit technology.
4. California's population plummets for first time since the pandemic — as LA sees staggering exodus (nypost.com) — Long Beach’s population slipped by about 0.2% last year, as part of a broader statewide trend that saw California lose a net 54,000 residents. The report links the exodus to high housing, gas, and living costs, with Los Angeles County experiencing the largest overall decline.
