📰 News we're reading

• Long Beach homeless shelters are filling up under direction of new provider, officials say (presstelegram.com) — Long Beach has rapidly boosted occupancy at its four city-run homeless shelters after replacing former operator First to Serve with nonprofit PATH, now filling about 96% of available beds. City officials describe the emergency handoff, changes to shelter rules and case management access, and plans for new substance use and mental health services while they prepare a longer-term competitive contract process.

• Long Beach's Latino Cultural Center will soon open its doors, with Centro CHA as its operator (presstelegram.com) — Long Beach has officially tapped local nonprofit Centro CHA to operate the new Latino Cultural Center at the Jenny Oropeza Community Center, with operations expected to begin within 90 days. Backed by about $4.5 million in planned site investments, the center will offer arts, cultural programming, education and community resources that highlight and support Long Beach’s large Latino population.

• Trash interceptors installed in L.A. and San Gabriel Rivers to reduce ocean pollution (audacy.com) — New trash interceptors on the L.A. and San Gabriel rivers aim to cut pollution before it reaches Long Beach’s coastline, with Mayor Rex Richardson backing the high-tech effort. The devices, part of a global Ocean Cleanup program, will complement Ballona Creek’s successful interceptor and are expected to be fully in place by the 2028 Olympics planned in Long Beach.
