Weather forecast:
1. West Nile virus detected in Pico Rivera — The Downey Patriot (thedowneypatriot.com) — Mosquitoes in Long Beach have tested positive for West Nile virus, marking the first confirmed activity in Los Angeles County this year and signaling that mosquito season has begun. Health officials urge residents to use EPA-recommended repellents, avoid dusk-to-dawn exposure, and remove standing water around homes to reduce breeding and lower infection risk.
2. Mercedes-Benz Pulls Plug on California Design Hub as 72 High-Paying Jobs Disappear in Atlanta Consolidation (theautowire.com) — Mercedes-Benz is closing its Long Beach research and design center this year, cutting at least 72 high-paying local jobs and shifting work to a new hub in Atlanta. The nearly 30-year-old facility helped generate close to 100 patents, and city officials are now scrambling to connect displaced engineers and staff with other Long Beach employers as the specialized R&D positions disappear.
3. Ransomware Attack Disrupts Grading Platform Used by LBUSD Cal State and LBCC (itsecuritynews.info) — A ransomware-linked cyberattack briefly knocked out Canvas access for Long Beach Unified, Cal State Long Beach, and Long Beach City College, disrupting coursework, grades, and internal communication. Access is being restored, but officials warn some personal and academic data may have been exposed while federal investigators and forensic teams continue probing the breach.
4. Long Beach's Martin Luther King Jr. Park will soon get renovations (presstelegram.com) — Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Central Long Beach is getting about $5 million in upgrades, including a new community center roof, renovated restrooms, a refreshed playground, and new basketball courts and walking paths. Backed by Measure A, federal funds, and county grants, construction on the first phase is expected to start this summer, with more improvements planned as additional funding arrives.
5. Long Beach to receive $6.7M for new sidewalks, pedestrian improvements in downtown area (presstelegram.com) — Downtown Long Beach will receive $6.7 million to build new sidewalks and improve pedestrian safety and accessibility, funded through a statewide transportation package. The money comes from California Transportation Commission approvals backed by state and federal infrastructure programs, which also support major projects like Bay Bridge upgrades and weather-related highway repairs across the state.
