📰 News we're reading

• 'Sharky Summer' Predicted For CA Beaches: 'A Perfect Storm' (patch.com) — Long Beach beachgoers could see more juvenile great white sharks and stingrays near shore this summer, as Cal State Long Beach’s Shark Lab warns of a “sharky summer” driven by unusually warm waters. Researchers have already spotted nursery hotspots from Belmont Shore to other SoCal beaches, and they urge locals to shuffle their feet to avoid stingrays while respecting sharks’ space.

• We Asked 5 Oncology Experts What They Never Eat and They All Said the Same Thing (star-telegram.com) — A colorectal surgeon at Long Beach Medical Center joins other oncology experts in warning that processed meats are a proven carcinogen, especially for colorectal cancer. They urge treating bacon, deli meats, and hot dogs as rare treats and instead centering meals on plant-forward diets and minimally processed proteins like poultry, fish, legumes, and dairy to lower long-term cancer risk.

• City of Barstow Approves $4B BNSF Rail Hub (connectcre.com) — Freight moving through the Port of Long Beach is slated to head more efficiently inland after Barstow approved a $4 billion BNSF rail hub that will receive containers directly from ships via the Alameda Corridor. The massive project aims to speed cargo to eastern markets while using zero-emission equipment, potentially easing congestion and pollution tied to port truck traffic in Southern California.
