Electric Scooter Rider Killed In Long Beach Collision

LONG BEACH, CA — A 31-year-old man riding an electric scooter was killed Sunday morning after colliding with a pickup truck in Long Beach, police said.

Long Beach Police Department officers responded at about 10 a.m. Sunday to the 5300 block of Walton Street following reports of an injury collision involving a vehicle and a person riding an electric scooter.

Officers arrived to find the scooter rider in the roadway. Police and a Good Samaritan rendered aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived, but despite lifesaving efforts, the man died at the scene, according to LBPD.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 2024 Toyota Tundra driven by a 42-year-old Long Beach resident was traveling eastbound on Walton Street when the scooter rider turned westbound onto Walton Street from Stanbridge Avenue, police said.

The scooter then drifted into the eastbound side of the roadway and collided with the Tundra, according to investigators. Police said the pickup driver saw the scooter approaching and was slowing to a stop when the collision occurred.

Speed, distracted driving and impaired driving do not appear to have contributed to the collision, police said.

The identity of the scooter rider was being withheld pending notification of his next of kin by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
