LONG BEACH, CA — More than 1,000 vehicles passed through a Long Beach DUI and driver's license checkpoint Friday night, but police reported no DUI arrests.
The Long Beach Police Department held the checkpoint at Anaheim Street and Freeman Avenue from 6 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday, according to results released Monday.
Of the 1,012 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, 372 drivers and vehicles were screened, police said.
Ten drivers were cited for driving without a license or with a suspended license, while police said three citations were issued for traffic violations.
LBPD had announced the checkpoint Wednesday but did not disclose its exact location beforehand, saying only that the operation would take place somewhere in the department's East Division.
Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on reported impaired driving-related crashes. The operations are intended to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and deter impaired drivers as well as people driving without a valid license.
The department has also reminded motorists that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription and over-the-counter medications can interfere with driving, while driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal despite medicinal and recreational cannabis being legal in California.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
